Extension of Permit Validity Until 28 May 2027
Critical update for all Lesotho Exemption Permit (LEP) holders issued by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. L.A. Schreiber (MP), in Immigration Directive No. 20 of 2025, as published in Government Gazette No. 53483 on 7 October 2025.
LEP Validity Officially Extended
Using the powers granted under section 31(2)(b) of the Immigration Act, the Minister has extended the validity of all existing Lesotho Exemption Permits (LEPs) until 28 May 2027.
This 18-month extension follows consultations by the newly appointed Immigration Advisory Board (IAB) and is intended to allow further engagement with key stakeholders as a long-term solution for LEP holders is developed.
Key Provisions of the Directive
As part of the extension, the following temporary concessions are in effect:
- Permit Validity Extended
- Existing LEPs, originally set to expire on 28 November 2025, are now deemed valid until 28 May 2027.
Protection from Deportation
No LEP holder may be arrested, detained, or deported for not having a valid exemption certificate during this extension period.
Right to Travel Maintained
LEP holders may enter and exit the Republic of South Africa, provided all other immigration requirements are met (excluding the requirement for a valid visa or exemption endorsement).
Application for Other Visa Categories Allowed
LEP holders may apply for any category of temporary visa under section 10(2) of the Immigration Act without the need to present a valid LEP, visa, or authorisation letter at the time of application.
What This Means for You
This directive offers LEP holders a legal and secure status until 2027, and we encourage you to use this time to:
- Regularise your stay (if applicable),
- Apply for a new visa where appropriate, and
- Seek immigration advice if you’re considering changing your permit status.
