On the 29th of March 2023, the Department of Home Affairs introduced temporary measures for foreign nationals considering the backlog in respect to processing outcomes of visa and waiver applications.
Individuals who are part of over 74,000 visa backlogs, are waiting for the outcomes of their pending waiver/visa applications. Long-term applications submitted on or before 31 March 2023, have been granted an extension and the deadline is 31 December 2023. This came as significant news for those affected by the visa backlog as they are allowed to leave and re-enter South Africa during this time and are visa-exempt, alternatively they would have been required to possess Visitor’s Visas.
The concession does not cater to long-term visa holders who applied/submitted after 31 March 2023 with visas expiring before 31 December 2023. It is also unfortunate for those who have applied for extensions of short-term stay (90 days or less) visas in South Africa, as the concession was only in place until 30 April 2023. This means that if an outcome was not received by 30 April 2023, the applicant would have had to leave South Africa on or before said date. If they opted to remain in the country, then they would have to stay until the application is processed.
