ZEP HOLDERS GIVEN BREATHING SPACE

On Wednesday 7 June 2023, the Minister of Home Affairs announced that ZEP holders would be granted a further grace period.

Previous Directive

The Directive issued in September 2022 granted ZEP holders an extension until 30 June 2023 to allow them to apply for either a mainstream visa or a Waiver. With the deadline set for the end of this month, many were rushing to get their applications in with many others panicking due to not knowing the correct procedure to apply for either a visa or a waiver. And as such, the new extension is being welcomed with much relief.

New Directive

The Minister announced that he would be giving a further grace period of 6 months until 31 December 2023. This means that ZEP holders’ visas will remain valid until 31 December 2023.

The Directive further goes on to instruct that no ZEP Holder may be arrested or deported for not holding a valid (not expired) permit. Additionally, they are permitted to leave and enter South Africa, and will not be required to produce a valid exemption permit or an authorization letter to remain in the Republic.

The Directive cites that the reason for the extension is to allow ZEP holders to apply for one or other visas and waivers. As such, this grace period is not cause for relaxation, it is a chance given to start with visa applications.

Next Steps

With the backlog of applications, as well as the rise in the number of applications being received, it is important now more than ever for those who have not yet applied to get their applications submitted.

It can be a daunting take for many who do not understand the processes and requirements for visa applications or waivers. It is vital however that applications being submitted are fully compliant to ensure a positive outcome. It would therefore be beneficial for those finding it difficult to apply to enlist the services of an Immigration service provider.
